How To Make Kwazii’s Ears & Tails

There’s a post on this site on how to make the Octonauts Kwazii costume from scratch. Check it out if you haven’t read it yet.

As I wrote in that tutorial, what makes a costume is really the details. So for Kwazii’s costume, think about Kwazii’s ears and tails and the three freckles (?) on each cheek.

It’s not easy to buy an orange ear and tail costume so this is most likely one of those things you will have to make yourself.

If you’re looking for tutorials on making cats ears and tails, here are some of the best ones that I’ve found. Many of these tutorials use black material so change this with orange/yellow to make them look exactly like Kwazii. Also, don’t forget that Kwazii’s right ear has little rip (?) from his swashbuckling days.

Is it cold where you are during Halloween? Here’s a cat ear hat using fleece material. A little sewing skill needed

Fashionably Jamie gives a short tutorial on making cats ears and tails. Very simple but you can get the basic idea of how to make one yourself. Forward to 0:55 if you want to get straight to the tutorial.

Octonauts Costume Inspiration

Many parents have been very busy making  Octonauts costumes for their little ones as there are no official costumes available yet. I doubt they are going to be available anytime soon.

We have our very own tutorial on this site on easy ways to make Octonauts costumes if you want to follow along. This currently includes tutorials on Captain Barnacles Costume, Kwazii costume and a Peso Costume.

You can also find some inspiration from the costumes below made by parents a lot more creative than I am.

Kwazii Cat Costume Ideas

Check out this Kwazii Cat costume complete with an eye patch and spots.  OneMommy made this for his son’s halloween costume last year. How cute is that? There’s even a pic of  Kwazii carrying a Jack-o-lantern.. I’m sure many other kids were thrilled to see Kwazii in the neighborhood!

Kathryn from A Mindful Life made this kwazii costume  for her lovely daughter for Halloween. She wasn’t too comfortable with a proper eye patch so Kathryn improvised with this one.

Captain Barnacles Costume

This Captain Barnacles costume was sent to our Undersea Heroes facebook page. Karen Bishop made this elaborate costume for his son’s Halloween costume. I wonder how long it took her to make this! So lovely.

And here ladies and gentlemen is half of the Octonauts crew. What a super mom making all these for the whole family. Rookie To Rock Star Blogger Becky Nicholas made this Octonauts costumes for Halloween.  Here we have Captain Barnacles, Kwazii, Peso and Dashi costumes for inspiration!

If you have any pictures of any Octonauts costume, do send it so I can post it here as well for other parents to see!

Octonauts Costume For Halloween

Octonauts Costume

It’s trick and treat time once again! What better way to go around the neighborhood than with one of the Octonauts costume? Here are some DIY ideas to help you make a costume for Halloween

Octonauts Costume

For the past year, I have seen Octonauts costume sold on Ebay – these are not official costumes but some of them are pretty good.

With Halloween coming in a couple of months, more and more of you guys are asking where to buy Octonauts costumes this year.

As far as I know, they will not be released this year! So I guess we will all have to make do with making our own costume or finding them on Ebay.

With a little bit of help from the comments section on the site and a little bit of research, I’ve come up with some ideas on how to make your own Octonauts costume at home.

Hope this helps some of parents. If you have any other ideas that I have not mentioned here, please don’t hesitate to make comments below.

Again, if you have any pictures of your little ones in these cute Octonauts costume, please do send them so I can post them on this site.

So far, I’ve only written costume ideas for the three main characters: Captain Barnacles, Kwazii Cat and Peso Penguin. I’ll try to find ideas for costumes for the rest of the Octonauts soon.

Please click the links below for instructions on how to make these costumes.

Octonauts Peso Costume

Octonauts Peso Costume

Octonauts Peso CostumeThe Peso costume is one of the easiest to avail of right now because there are a lot of Penguin costumes that you can easily buy.

Below is a Penguin costume that you can easily customize to look like Peso. The greatest challenge you’ll have with this costume is getting rid of the beak and the eyes which are attached to the head.

Disclaimer: I haven’t bought this costume, so I wouldn’t know exactly how tricky it is  to cut those beaks and eyes off. But if you do manage to do that, then you can easily put an Octonauts hat on top of it.

Also you would have to get rid of that red ribbon and put a blue collar instead. As I mentioned in the Kwazii cat costume, you can use an old shirt for the blue collar. Here’s a link on how to make a collar at home.

Peso Costume – The Hat

  • Remember that Peso has a medic hat and differs from that one used by the other Octonauts. Refer to the picture below
  • And don’t forget to paint the face white with a little Peso beak of course! Check out this picture for a penguin face paint

And most important of all, don’t forget Peso’s medical kit!

DIY Octonauts Kwazii Costume

Octonauts Kwazii costume

Octonauts Kwazii costumeThe most basic things you need for a Kwazii costume is an orange suit and an eye patch – add to that an Octonauts hat and your little one will easily be distinguishable as Kwazii the Pirate cat with the mysterious past.

You can have the orange suite by doing one of the following:

  • sew the costume yourself
  • buy a cat costume and customize it to look like Kwazii
  • buy an orange pajama/thermal set. Failing that, a white one and dyeing it orange

Some Orange Ideas

The image is an orange thermal set available at Amazon. You can start with something like this.

You will need to customize this to look more like Kwazii.

You will need

              • felt paper/clother that’s lighter than the suit
              • blue felt paper/cloth

Use the lighter orange felt paper for Kwazii’s tummy. Cut it into an oval shape making sure that it fits the front part well. Then sew it, glue-gun it or double-sided tape it – whatever is easy for you.

The blue felt paper is for Kwazii’s collar. Make a collar from an old shirt or at the very least, use that old shirt collar as a pattern. Get ideas from this collar-making tutorial.

Kwazii’s Face

Now to perfect the Kwazii costume, use a face paint to make a cat face.

Below is a vidoe on how to do this. If you’re artistically inclined then follow this to the letter by all means. For people like me who are artistically challenged, I find that just painting the face orange, defining the eyes and drawing cat whiskers is enough for a simple cat face.

And don’t forget that Kwazii has three spots on each cheek

And Of course the Little Things:

  • Kwazii’s paws are orange. Use an orange pair of gloves or mittens.
  • For shoes, use blue boots and make sure to tuck the trousers into the boots.
  • Here’s a plain eyepatch at Amazon
  • Use the Octonauts hat costume tutorial. Normally, I would not bother with the ears, but I think that Kwazii’s ears are special and should be part of the Kwazii costume. So if you can add ears to the hat, so much the better.
  • Lastly, don’t forget to make the tail! I once made a tail when my son wanted Eeyore’s tail and all I did was stuff a sock. Perhaps you have a spare orange sock lying around?
  • And don’t forget the orange ears and tail!
